Start with the right council

Kirklees Council is the local authority for Huddersfield, handling services such as council tax, waste collection, planning and many community facilities. West Yorkshire Combined Authority has regional responsibilities including transport and skills. The two organisations have different roles.

For a problem at home or on your street, start with the council’s relevant service page and provide the precise address. Nearby places outside Kirklees may have a different council even when a business describes itself as serving Huddersfield.

Libraries and the Community Directory

The new Huddersfield Library Hub opened in September 2026. Use the council’s current library listings for its location, opening times, facilities and activities, rather than relying on an old town-centre library address.

Kirklees Community Directory is also useful for finding organisations, activities and local events. Check who runs an activity and how to join; a directory entry is a starting point, not a guarantee that a group meets every week.

Find a group that suits you

Sports clubs, arts venues, charities and neighbourhood organisations offer different ways to take part in local life. Ask about membership, age ranges, accessibility and whether a booking or introductory session is needed.

Our Community and Leisure category includes a mixture of organisations and commercial venues. Their inclusion does not imply council endorsement or that all activities are free. Contact the organiser for the arrangements that apply to you.

Use the appropriate health or urgent service

For an immediate emergency, call 999. NHS 111 can help with urgent medical advice when it is not a life-threatening emergency; use the official NHS service to find the right route. Local opticians, physiotherapists and other practitioners have their own appointment and eligibility arrangements.

This business directory is not an emergency reporting channel. For routine services, check availability directly and explain any access needs before attending. Corrections to a listing can be sent through our contact page.
